NEW BREAST HEALTH CENTER AT SOUTHAMPTON HOSPITAL

IS NAMED FOR ELLEN P. HERMANSON

Southampton Hospital’s new breast health center, planned for a late spring 2009 opening, has been named The Ellen P. Hermanson Breast Health Center.  The existing center, in its present location since 1996, will move to a new, spacious area in the Hospital and will have a private entrance to the east of the Hospital’s main entrance on Meeting House Lane.  At 3,320 square feet, the new space almost triples the original 1,200 sq. feet, greatly enhancing the center’s ability to serve the growing demand for services in a state-of-the-art, patient-centered facility close to home.  Unlike the existing situation, all breast-related services will be located within the new center.

Funding for the construction has been pledged by The Ellen P. Hermanson Foundation, a long-time supporter of the Hospital’s breast health program.  Its support for Southampton Hospital over the years has provided funding for technology, including a Mammotome® Breast Biopsy System, a Kodak Multiloader Processor, a Computer-Aided Detection System, a Full-Field Digital Mammography unit and the Multicare upgrade package for the Hospital’s Stereotactic Breast Biopsy System.  The Foundation has also supported the expansion of the hospital's pain management program, incorporating mind-body techniques, for breast cancer patients.  The namesake of the foundation, Ellen P. Hermanson, fought a personal battle with breast cancer by becoming an activist and advocate.  A talented writer and journalist, she gave a voice to the issues related to breast cancer, educated her readers to the importance of early-detection and informed them of the availability of resources.

At Southampton Hospital, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer continues to be a clinical priority.  Southampton Hospital’s Breast Health Center is the only facility of its kind on Eastern Long Island featuring state-of-the-art services, from routine screening mammograms to sonograms, to stereotatic and core biopsies.  Finely tuned teamwork and collaboration between the Breast Health Center, surgeons and medical and radiation oncologists provide rapid diagnosis and treatment.

Robert S. Chaloner comments, “Our Board of Directors and staff are deeply grateful to The Ellen P. Hermanson Foundation for its support since our Center first opened.  Their steadfast commitment to enabling us to provide the best possible breast healthcare to the East End has had an extraordinary impact on our diagnostic and treatment capabilities.  Just as important to patients is the convenient access to our services, allowing them to stay close to home, rather than traveling a distance.  It is with great pleasure that we are naming our new Breast Health Center after Ms. Hermanson, and it is a great honor to have the support of the Foundation that bears her name.”
