Southampton Hospital’s Thrift Shop

In October 1971, the spacious two-story building at 79 Main Street, Southampton, was donated to Southampton Hospital from the estate of Elizabeth Burnett Tupper. Soon after, it was transformed into the Southampton Hospital Thrift Shop. Since it opened, the Thrift Shop and its staff of hard-working and dedicated volunteers have raised nearly $5 million to support Southampton Hospital. Proceeds, earned from donations and sales, have been used for many important capital improvements, and patient care telemetry and anesthesia equipment. The Thrift Shop funded the renovation of Parrish Memorial Hall in 1995, donated a state-of-the-art mammotome to the Breast Health Center in 2001and funded the recent purchase and installation of a new fire alarm system for the entire Hospital.

The success of the Thrift Shop is due to our incomparable volunteers, who prepare the merchandise for display and sales. Two entire floors of the Shop are devoted to selling a wide variety of merchandise and the basement and attic are used for storage. When the Shop is not open volunteers can be found busily sifting through donated items, setting prices and arranging the merchandise in attractive displays.

The Thrift Shop is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. for sales. Donations are accepted ONLY on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. from Memorail Day to Labor Day.  Contact the Thrift Shop manager for off-season donation hours. Customers can be seen waiting in line in the early hours before the shop opens, eager to peek at the newest merchandise which changes weekly.  The Shop's window displays also gather crowds, and the Christmas display of 2005 won the prize for the "Best Window Decor" in the village.

Any questions concerning donations should be directed to Thrift Shop manager Maureen Engel at 631-204-0526.
