FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE
A “patient centered” practice that is tailored to the individual, with a focus on primary prevention and underlying health issues, rather than symptoms associated with serious chronic disease. Functional Medicine is a science-based field of health care grounded in the following principles:
• Biochemical individuality stresses the importance of individual variations in metabolic function that derive from genetic and environmental differences among individuals.
• Dynamic balance of internal and external factors.
• Web-like interconnections of physiological factors; an abundance of research supports the view that the human body functions as an orchestrated network of interconnected systems, rather than individual systems functioning autonomously and without affect on each other.
• Health as a positive vitality not merely the absence of disease.
• Promotion of organ reserve as the means to enhance health span.

HEALTH COUNSELING
“A Health Counselor is a wellness authority, nutrition and supportive coach. People work with health counselors to achieve their health goals in areas such as weight management, food cravings, sleep, energy and digestion. Together, the Health Counselor and client customize a plan to upgrade the client’s nutrition and other aspects of their life, including career, relationships, physical activity and spirituality. During the program, clients develop a deep understanding of the foods and lifestyle that work best for them, and implement lasting changes that improve their energy, balance and health for the rest of their lives.” www.integrativenutrition.com
The Counselor’s goal is to create a connection with each client and be a personal advocate for living an energized and healthy life. Each client learns tools that work to create a lifestyle that is healthy, flexible, fun and free of denial and discipline. By working together, the client and Health Counselor explore food and lifestyle choices that best support the individual and facilitate sustainable, lifelong change.
MASSAGE THERAPY
Licensed Massage Therapists specialize in various types of massage including: medical massage, sports massage, pregnancy massage, and massage for the cancer patient, as well as Reiki/healing touch, foot reflexology, craniosacral therapy, and manual lymph drainage. Massage therapy reduces inflammation, fluid retention and muscle stiffness, increases flexibility, promotes healing, and relieves tension.
ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture involves the stimulation of specific points on the body with fine, disposable needles or finger pressure. It works through the body’s nervous system and other mechanisms to relieve many physical ailments and emotional problems. Treatments last approximately one hour. The first treatment includes a thorough intake which involves the patient's medical history and an evaluation of the tongue and pulse. The physical treatment lasts anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes.
Does Acupuncture hurt?
There may be some slight discomfort upon the insertion of the needle, but that quickly subsides. Many times the needle will not be felt at all. There may be different sensations felt that a person may not be used to experiencing. For example, there may be a shooting sensation, tingling or a feeling of heaviness at the needle site. The sensations depend on the sensitivity of the patient, the location of the needle and the technique being used.
How deep do the needles go?
The needles are usually only inserted about 1/4 inch to one inch into the skin. Longer needles may be used in fleshier areas or in patients with more flesh.
How many visits are necessary?
This depends on the chronicity of the condition. More chronic conditions will usually take more treatments while some acute conditions may be resolved in one treatment. It also depends on how quickly each individual heals.
What conditions can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is most widely known for treating pain, but it is a complete system of medicine and can theoretically be used to treat anything. There have been studies done that show better outcomes when Western medicine is combined with acupuncture. The World Health Organization has a list of conditions acupuncture has been proven to be effective for. http://www.acupuncture-schools.us/national-institute-health-nih-acupuncture.cfm
COGNITIVE SCREENING
Most people become forgetful as part of natural aging, for example, misplacing things and difficulty remembering names or faces. A cognitive screening provides an individual, confidential personal awareness of current cognitive skills such as visual, spatial, memory, language, attention, problem solving, and mental flexibility. Following completion of a background and information form, the scheduled cognitive screening session requires just a few hours in a professional office at the Wellness Institute. Valerie King, Ph.D., a New York State-licensed psychologist, will administer several standardized screening tools, consisting of puzzles, pencil and paper drawings as well as computerized tasks. Results will be compared to demographic norms, such as age, gender and educational level, to provide a baseline of cognitive functioning. A verbal summary outlining strengths and weaknesses will be provided by Dr. King in a scheduled 30-minute phone feedback session. A cognitive screening during midlife or in the senior years may provide some reassurance, with recommendations for cognitive enhancement. A baseline cognitive screening could be useful information for anyone in the event of illness or injury where there may be a change in cognitive functioning, and a neuropsychological evaluation; a more in-depth assessment may be warranted.
EEG BIOFEEDBACK
Also known as Neurofeedback, Biofeedback is helpful for improved concentration, sleep, mood, and performance. It is a non-invasive therapy that trains the brain by rewarding optimal frequencies through the use of video games. Brainwave training has a stabilizing effect, and can also be effective for anxiety, hyperactivity, OCD, and seizure disorders. Generally, a number of training sessions are required for lasting results. This varies from person to person and is evaluated on an individual basis.
ENERGY MEDICINE WITH ONDAMED
Ondamed works by stimulating the body’s connective tissue with mild sounds and magnetic pulses at various frequencies. Pulse biofeedback is used to individualize the treatment. Pain can be significantly reduced, the body relaxed, and healing encouraged at the cellular level. All systems are energized, as overall health is enhanced.
EXERCISE COUNSELING
It has been proven that exercise lowers blood pressure, cholesterol levels, body weight, and helps to maintain your functional and cognitive abilities that keep you independent as you age. Furthermore, regular exercise can reduce or even eliminate your need for many prescription medications. If you are concerned that exercise might be unsafe for you because you have health concerns such as heart disease, diabetes, or osteoporosis, or if you are concerned that you do not know how to exercise properly, enlist the help of a certified exercise physiologist to teach you individual parameters for safe and effective exercise. Your goals are more easily achieved when you exercise properly.

Stress Management is a six-week program that covers the following topics: Nature of Stress and Disease, “Change your Mind, Change your Mood,” Relaxation Techniques, “Laugh for the Health of It” and “Stress and Human Spirituality.” Every day and in every aspect of our lives we come across stress. After all, stress is a part of our lives, and not all stress is bad. But we can become overwhelmed with stress in our everyday lives, and when it becomes chronic or unmanaged, we open ourselves up to a variety of illnesses. Stress-related behaviors begin with our perceptions, which are usually negative, distorted, and illogical. This series discusses stress and how it affects us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In addition, stress management techniques and a variety of coping skills will be reviewed and practiced. Learn how to manage stress though a variety of stress management techniques and coping skills that will be reviewed and practiced, to enhance your health and well-being.
MIND/BODY PROGRAMS
Mind/Body medicine combines conventional medical treatment with an awareness of how behavior and attitude can affect health. The diagnosis of an illness can be overwhelming and stressful, affecting a person mentally, physically and spiritually. Our program is designed to supplement medical treatment by helping the participant cope with the stress of illness, and make informed choices about treatment.
Each course will consist of eight weekly group sessions, 90 minutes in length. An initial medical evaluation is necessary and is covered by most insurance providers. Following the evaluation, course leaders tailor a program suitable to the needs of the individual. In addition, a post-program assessment is conducted to determine results and acquire feedback from the participant. The following programs are offered:
• Cancer Wellness
• Cardiac Wellness
• Diabetes Management
• Medical Symptom Reduction
Factors such as lifestyle, stress, diet, and physical tension that contribute to your symptoms will be examined and discussed. Classes consist of stress management and relaxation techniques, strategies to enhance coping skills, as well as information on how yoga, nutrition, exercise, journal writing, group support and humor can contribute to and promote a sense of well-being and, ultimately, healing.
The Wellness Institute Staff leading these programs have completed extensive training at Benson-Henry Institute for Mind/Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and they are certified in Mind/Body Medicine.
