Family Medicine
The Residency Program in Social Osteopathic Medicine
Program Overview
The Southampton Hospital Family Medicine residency is a comprehensive
training program, which instructs physicians in the care of the entire
family. The program focuses on the
complex bio-medical skills needed by physicians to provide healthcare to their
patients and not simple disease management.
Our educational philosophy is that disease is not a random occurrence,
thus our primary focus is on evidence based preventive medicine. However, the
best evidence based approach is fruitless unless the physician can influence
their patients to implement the necessary changes needed to promote a health
sustaining life style. To that end, our program teaches clinicians how to be medical leaders, who can inspire
patients to make those changes and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Curriculum Overview
The family medicine curriculum prepares residents to be successful medical
leaders, academicians and clinical experts.
To that end, our program focuses on all aspects of the health care
system and the skills required to successfully navigate it. The program is heavily-focused on
preventative medicine, osteopathic practices and principles, as well as,
inpatient and outpatient medicine.
Despite the intense academics, trainees will find this program allows
the time to maintain a healthy lifestyle while learning the important features
of health promotion. In addition to
their patient care responsibilities, residents will be given the opportunity to
teach and participate in community outreach program.
OGME-1R
Research is one of the requirements of the Family Medicine
Residency at Southampton Hospital. Thus,
during the first year of training residents will begin conducting a publishable
research project. The research will be
conducted under the supervision of an attending physician and will be submitted
for publication in the beginning of the third year.

supervision of board certified emergency medicine physicians. Our Emergency Medicine Service offers all

training program. We assign interns a
specific clinic session for the year, and they are responsible for keeping that

evidence based medicine.
