The Residency Program in Community Osteopathic Medicine
Internal Medicine
Our program is designed to prepare physicians for “real world” medicine with “real world” people. The program tenets include multiple primary care rotations and exposure to modern cardiology, gastroenterology, and other medical specialties. All physician preceptors are board certified and practice medicine on the South Fork of Long Island, offering world class technology and information systems.
During the first year, residents will be exposed to a multitude of information without being utilized as service agents. The hospital is well equipped with technicians and phlebotomists to leave the resident ample time to engage with patients and other physicians.
OGME-1
CARDIOLOGY (1 Rotation)
On the Cardiology Medicine Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified cardiologists (MD/DO) in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
CRITICAL CARE (2 Rotations)
Critical Care medicine for the residency program in community internal medicine will be provided by Nassau University Medical Center. Time on the Critical Care service is as follows:

Four (4) weeks of intensive care unit (ICU)

Four (4) weeks of pulmonary care unite (PCU)
EMERGENCY MEDICINE (1 Rotation)
On the Emergency Medicine Service, residents work under the supervision of emergency medicine attendings. Time on Emergency Medicine service will be as follows:

Four (4) weeks of hospital-based emergency medicine
MEDICINE (4 Rotations)
On the Medicine Service, the residents will work side-by-side with the attending Internists. Time on Medicine Service is broken down as follows:

Sixteen (16) weeks of inpatient medicine
SURGERY (1 Rotation)
On the Surgical Service, residents work under the supervision of attending surgeons. This is an inpatient service broken down as follows:

Four (4) weeks of general surgery
WOMEN’S HEALTH (1 Rotation)
On the Women’s Health Service, residents work under the supervision of attending obstetricians and gynecologists (MD/DO). This is an inpatient and outpatient service broken down as follows:

Two (2) weeks of obstetrics

Two (2) weeks of ambulatory gynecology
SELECTIVES (2 Rotations)
Residents will select any acceptable selective listed below for a maximum of one month except additional general internal medicine, which may be two months. The acceptable selectives include:

Internal Medicine block nights can be used as one of these two months and will include a minimum of five (5) structured hours per week.

OGME-2
AMBULATORY INTERNAL MEDICINE
For the ambulatory internal medicine experience, residents work under the supervision of board-certified attending internists in an outpatient setting. The clinical site is located off the hospital campus in an adjacent office complex. This setting provides more of a “private practice” rather than an “institutional” atmosphere.
Residents in Internal Medicine spend two days per week in the Meeting House Lane Medical Associates developing a panel of patients whom they will continue to care for the entire training program. We assign residents a specific clinic session for the year, and they are responsible for keeping that session despite other rotation duties unless specifically excused by the Program Director.
AMBULATORY MEDICINE (1 Rotation)
On the Ambulatory Medicine Service, residents have full daily responsibilities in the out-patient setting.
ENDOCRINOLOGY (1 Rotation)
On the Endocrinology Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified endocrinologists in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
GASTROENTEROLOGY (1 Rotation)
On the Gastroenterology Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified gastroenterologists in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY (1 Rotation)
On the Hematology/Oncology Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified hematologists/oncologists in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
INFECTIOUS DISEASE / AIDS MEDICINE/ (1 Rotation)
On the HIV/AIDS Medicine Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified infectious disease specialists in the David E. Rogers Health Center, satellite of Southampton Hospital.
MEDICINE (4 Rotations)
On the Medicine Service, the resident will work side-by-side with the attending Internists. Time on Medicine Service is broken down as follows:

Sixteen (16) weeks of inpatient medicine
NEPHROLOGY (1 Rotation)
On the Nephrology Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified nephrologists in consultation services for inpatients and at the Southampton Hospital Regional Dialysis Center in Hampton Bays, satellite of Southampton Hospital.
NEUROLOGY (1 Rotation)
On the Neurology Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified neurologists in consultation services for inpatients and at the Southampton Hospital, which is a New York State designated stroke center.
PULMONARY CRITICAL CARE (1 Rotation)
Pulmonary Critical Care medicine for the residency program in community internal medicine will be provided by Nassau University Medical Center. Time on the Pulmonary Critical Care service is as follows:

RHEUMATOLOGY (1 Rotation)
On the Rheumatology Service, residents work under the supervision of a rheumatologist in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
VACATION

HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY (1 Rotation)
On the Hematology/Oncology Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified hematologist/oncologists in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
MEDICINE (4 Rotations)
On the Medicine Service, the resident will work side-by-side with the attending Internists. Time on Medicine Service is broken down as follows:

MUSCULOSKELETAL MEDICINE (2 Rotations)
On the Musculoskeletal Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified orthopaedics, rheumatologists, and neuromusculoskeletal physicians in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Residents will also be involved in rehabilitation services at Southampton Hospital and satellite sites.
RADIOLOGY (.5 Rotation)
On the Radiology Service, residents have full daily responsibilities in the in and out-patient setting.
SURGERY (1 Rotation)
On the Surgical Service, residents work under the supervision of attending surgeons. This is an inpatient service broken down as follows:
