The Residency Program in Community Osteopathic Medicine

Family Medicine

OGME-1R

Research is one of the requirements of the Family Medicine Residency at Southampton Hospital.  Thus, during the first year of training residents will begin conducting a publishable research project.  The research will be conducted under the supervision of an attending physician and will be submitted for publication in the beginning of the third year.

AMBULATORY MEDICINE (.5 Rotation)

Our Ambulatory Medicine Service offers the rewards and challenges of outpatient medicine in a beautiful full service office setting. Under the guidance of our board certified Family physicians, residents will have full daily responsibilities in the out-patient setting.  Residents will spend these two weeks learning the integration and application of osteopathic medicine, not as a disease management system, but as a health promotion system.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE (2 Rotations)

On the Emergency Medicine Service residents work under the supervision of board certified emergency medicine physicians.  Our Emergency Medicine Service offers all aspects of emergency care with over 25,000 visits annually.  During this rotation, residents will hone their procedural skills to include intubations, chest tubes, IV’s, and suturing techniques.

FAMILY PRACTICE

On the Family Practice Service, residents work under the supervision of attending family practitioners in a predominantly outpatient setting.  The family practice clinic is located off the hospital campus in a community nearby.  This setting provides more of a “private practice” rather than an “institutional” atmosphere.

Residents in Family Medicine spend one-half day per week in the Westhampton Primary Care Center, developing a panel of patients whom they will continue to care for the entire training program.  We assign interns a specific clinic session for the year, and they are responsible for keeping that session despite other rotation duties unless specifically excused by the Program Director.  Here residents will learn how to become health care advocates, and bring to bear the best of evidence based medicine.

MEDICINE (4 Rotations)

On the Medicine Service, residents will work side-by-side with a board certified attending Internists.  Our medicine rotation is entirely in house, and will provide the depth and breath of cases needed to become outstanding at in-patient medicine.  Time on Medicine Service is broken down into three (3) months of medical floors and one (1) month of ICU training.

OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY (1 Rotation)

On the OB/GYN Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified attending Obstetricians and Gynecologists.  Labor and Delivery and inpatient OB/GYN services are all provided at Southampton Hospital.  Residents will also have the opportunity to participate in oncologic gynecology.

PEDIATRICS (1.5 Rotations)

On the Pediatric Service, residents work under the supervision of a board certified Pediatrician.  The Pediatric rotation provides experience in the basics of pediatric care.  This rotation provides more of a “private practice” rather than an “institutional” experience.  Residents will also rotate through the neo-natal ward, and have experience in adolescent medicine.

SURGERY (2 Rotations)

On the Surgical Service, residents work under the supervision of board certified surgeons.  Residents will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of surgical care.  Residents will also rotate through the surgical sub-specialties to include: Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Urology and Vascular.  All surgical rotations are done in house.

IN-HOUSE ELECTIVE (1 Rotation)

Residents may choose from a vetted list of electives a rotation at Southampton Hospital with approval of the Program Director and the department in which the resident wants to rotate.  The approved list of in-house electives includes: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonology, Radiology, Rheumatology and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine.
